Patients should maintain their regular medication schedule unless their physician instructs otherwise. Notify the staff of any medications taken prior to the scan. All female patients between ages 12-55 must be screened for pregnancy. All patients must be screened for diabetes.

Prior to a PET scan, patients must fast for 6 hours. Patients with diabetes may eat 2-4 hours prior to appointment. Patients are encouraged to drink an unlimited amount of water prior to the exam, but no other liquids. Refrain from performing any strenuous exercise the day before the study.

Patients should dress in warm, comfortable, loose fitting clothing as the exam room is very cool. It will not be necessary to change into a hospital gown. While the PET scan is conducted in a very secure environment, it is recommended that valuable items be left at home.
